and help tackle bowel cancer!

The Mr Brightside Project and the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK along with the Professional Footballers Association and the Adam Stansfield Foundation are coming together after the sad death of Exeter City player Adam Stansfield last year at the age of 31 from bowel cancer.  The disease is the second highest cause of cancer death in the UK where 44 people die every day.

All partners are calling for people to stand up against the disease!

The “Know the Score” Campaign is hoping to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer particulary amongst players, fans and everyone associated with the game.

Know your body!

Bowel cancer can effect men & women of all ages but is most common in the over 60s. So get to know your body and if you notice any of the following and they last longer than four-six weeks, make an appointment to see your GP:

• Bleeding from the bottom without any obvious reason

• A persistent change in bowel habit to looser or more frequent bowel movements

•  A lump in your tummy or tummy pain, especially if it’s severe

Chances are it won’t be cancer, but it’s better to play safe.

As well as spotting it early, one way to help tackle bowel cancer is to do things that can reduce your risk of developing the disease. Taking these steps doesn’t definitely mean you won’t develop cancer, but it helps to stack the odds in your favour:

•  Maintain a healthy weight

•  Be physically active

•  Cut down on alcohol

•  Be a non-smoker

•  Eat a healthy, balanced diet that’s high in fibre and low in red and processed meat

It’s important to…

•  Take part in bowel cancer screening when invited

• Take steps to reduce your risk of the disease
• Be aware of changes in your body and report them to a doctor
